Kuusamo is over, I am happy to report I did have some success there. I was able to pull of a career best 18th place. I am very happy with this result but I also know that I can ski better. My efforts in the comp were still not on par with my best jumps from training. On the cross-country course I think its only going to get better from here. Kuusamo was very challenging. Not only is it a big big jump that can put a lot of advantage on the jumping side of the sport but it was also very cold. The cold made the cross-country racing difficult. The course combined with the cold slow snow made it feel like we were trying to ski on sand paper. My engine however felt good, however I felt that I could use some more races to help get some more speed under my belt. I am confident heading into this next weekend that I can accomplish the same results and hopefully more. I know our team is capable of the best, and our sights are set on fulfilling that this weekend in Lillehammer.
Our team is here in Kuusamo, Finland. Our first day of training is over. It feels good to get the first official training of the season out of the way. Today was tough the gate was low and the wind was a bit all over the place but all in all it was a very good comp. Our team is look ahead with optimistic thoughts for the weekend. All of us have had some good jumps and know that we can be competitive this weekend. Tomorrow is our first comp and Saturday will be the second comp. The first competition weekend of the season is pretty crazy. Since this is my first time to the opener it's been a new experience for me.
The weather is extremely cold and the sun hardly shines up here. I know we have had good weather for Kuusamo so far and we are hoping it stays that way. The internet is a bit scarce up here so stay tuned and I will try to update you as quickly as possible about the next two days competitions!
Here is a really nice article written about Taylor and I about heading into the new season. Check it out! Thanks to everyone back home including Honey Stinger and Steamboat!
The last two weeks we have been very busy with training and recovery. This week we are getting ready to head off to Norway and Finland for the first comps of the year. Last week we did a bunch of intensity at the beginning of the week followed by a few days off towards the end of the week. This week is all about speed. We will be putting some speed into our legs, by doing intervals on the treadmill. This is important because our first races will be a low elevation making the paces of the races higher. We have a giant treadmill at the Center of Excellence we use to push our selves on which makes it very easy to ramp up the speed without pushing ourselves out of our zones.
Next week we head of to Lillehammer, Norway for a couple days of training before we head up to Kuusamo, Finland for the season openers. After Kuusamo we will head back to Lillehammer for the second week of competition. The entire team is excited to get the season under way. So wish us luck and check back soon for more updates!
