Last week I spent my time in Lake Powell. I will say I couldn't of had a better rest week after a hard last couple weeks. I spent my days fishing and riding around on jet skis. We had a great crew there and I enjoyed their company immensely.
This week we are back on the grind. We kicked the week off with some testing on the cross country side and will be doing a time trial on Saturday at Soldier Hollow. We have also spent a good amount of time on the jump hill and I am happy to say its been fun breaking in the new equipment for winter. The countdown till we are on snow has begun!
Its the end of the first day of Competition here at the Flaming Leaves Festival in Lake Placid, NY. The NC team had a solid day with 3 guys in the top 5 in special jumping. I had a solid competition which is a great confidence booster going into the season. I was happy with my 4th place finish today and I am hoping to repeat again tomorrow.
Tomorrow we are doing a fun team sprint where each national team guy is being paired with a junior. We did this at Nationals this summer and I am excited for tomorrow. I feel it is a great way to mix things up and add some more excitement to the event. It also gives the juniors a chance to race among the big guys.
Yesterday we did Climb to the Castle an annual race up to the top of Whiteface Mountain. Our team went out with the best intentions to hammer down. Brett Denny had a great day finishing among the top 10. The race was relentless because of high winds and cold weather. Supposedly there were gust up to 50 miles and hour possibly more. The gusts would stop you in your tracks. The rest of our team skied average races, not horrible but no our best either. I went out too hard and had to fight to get back in the game after blowing up. I finished a respective 18th however. I will definitely be back next year for a rematch.
Stay tuned for more updates from tomorrows competition!
Right now the team is here in Lake Placid, NY for the annual Flaming Leaves Competition. Every year we come to Lake placid for these competitions as well as a training camp. LP has always been a great place to train in the fall, usually we have the juniors come along and its a great way to give them one more opportunity to train with the big guys before the season starts.
As well as the annual jump comps there is also Climb to the Castle. A special cross country race starting on the Veterans Memorial Highway and finishing at the top of Whiteface Mountain. This race is a very good indicator of the shape you are in since both Nordic Combined and Special Cross Country do the race. Its a grueling climb that never lets up, and can be very cold and windy. Typically in the past our team has done very well in the race and we are hoping to continue that tradition.
We are just about a month away from the start of the World Cup Season so the mini comps and time trials becoming very frequent among our team. These mini competitions, usually just including our team and the juniors, gives each athlete a chance to get the feel of racing back also helps build your speed. Today we had a mini comp with one jump to count and a 9k time trial. Since it was raining outside it made it a tough day. Our boots were soaked and the pavement was slippery. We raced on a new course a lot of us had never done before. However the team did well considering the conditions. Billy D won the comp, Taylor was second skiing a really fast race. I was third, and Todd Lodwick was fourth. Both Taylor and I were happy with our results.
Tomorrow we will have another day of jumping and intervals and then the weekend of racing and competitions kicks off. Friday we have the climb to the castle. Saturday we have the Flaming Leaves Competition and Sunday we will have a time trial along with a jumping competition. We travel home Monday for a week of rest and then right back into the action. Check back for updates on this weekends competitions!
